Ten Years on Top!
Woohoo! Today we are delighted to be celebrating our 10th Green Flag Award for being one of the very best parks in the UK. The award recognizes and rewards the best parks and green spaces across country and the we will be proudly flying our new flag from the front of the Forest Centre. The award is given for ‘high standards, beautifully maintained green space and excellent facilities,’ (stop it, we’re blushing!) We received our very first Green Flag Award in 2007/08 but we couldn’t have kept this winning streak up for 10 years(!) without the dedication and passion of our small Ranger team and volunteers. Well done to all (and well done to everyone who managed to brave the heat and get into the shape of a giant ’10′ for the above photo.)
Notable achievements in recent years obviously include the continual development of the Wetlands Nature Reserve, with the introduction of an artificial sand martin nesting bank a few years ago (with 22 nesting pairs in its first year), the opening of the Tower Hide last summer and the introduction of adapted bikes for hire for individuals with a range of disabilities. It’s our goal to maintain a harmonious balance between public accessibility and creating and maintaining safe, natural habitats for many species, including those in decline. We’re pretty proud of what we’ve achieved, and we hope all visitors love it as much as we do! Anna Charles, Head Ranger says, ‘We’re delighted to be celebrating our 10th consecutive Green Flag Award, which is a testament to the hard work and commitment of the Ranger team supported by thousands of hours of donated time from our amazing volunteers.’
The fact that the Park is run by a charity who receive no core funding makes the Green Flag Award an even greater achievement.
