Waving goodbye to Woodworks

Submitted by on October 18, 2013 – 3:01 pm18 Comments

After 11 years of our wonderfully woody celebration of woodlands and wood crafts – Woodworks, we have decided to move in a different direction in future and not host the yearly event. We appreciate all your support over the years, and how much enjoyment it brought to everyone, young and old, from avid woodturners to novice pyrographers, and all inbetween. Special thanks goes to Michele Read for organising the fabulous music tent over the years – bringing people together from all over the country to celebrate their love for folk music. This year we asked you what you love most about Woodworks, and as we look to the future of events at the Forest Centre, let’s look back at some of the highlights from this years’ final Woodworks.

We were fortunate to play at the last two Woodworks and really looked forward to the event. Michele and her team always did an excellent job and we will have fond memories of this unique and well loved week-end, Ned.

  • Mark Salter says:

Gutted by the news. Having just moved to the area, we popped along to woodworks on the advice of a friend. We thoroughly enjoyed our day, especially the Vikings and found the whole event very relaxed and chilled.

We were looking forward to nexr year and are very disappounted it won’t be running.

    • Sam Tree Hugger says:

We’re glad to hear you loved the event, Mark! Don’t worry – we’ll be hosting a wide variety of events in future, so you won’t be disappointed! Make sure you visit our website and pop into the Forest Centre regularly to see what’s going on!

  • Ragnar says:

This is very sad news, Wryngwyrm Vikings have always enjoyed the woodworks event over the years we have attended. It has to be our favourite show of the year.

  • Sue Lang says:

I am really sad to see the Woodworks! show stopping.
Bedfordshire Beekeepers have supported this event for many years – in fact it’s how I first met them, got signed up for their evening class and made a whole new group of friends.

If anyone is interested in beekeeping, and having us at your show/event please fill in the contact form on our website.

  • margaret says:

oh no! i’m dismayed at this news! i put woodworks in the annual calender and we have arranged other family outings around this festival to ensure we can attend! what is going in its place? there is nothing i know of that is quite like it!

  • cata says:

We only found you this year and had a great show. this is sad news but hopefully the new events planned can include us? cheers for the info and we will see you all at the Christmas tree festival in Dec. love and light cata

  • Steve & Ruth says:

Although I had played at Woodworks as a guest musician in the past, 2013 was our first year as crafters for the whole weekend and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute, meeting some quite wonderful and inspiring people of all ages. A sad thing to lose such an event, but hopefully whatever replaces it will be just as wonderful…

Love to all from Steve & Ruth x

  • Eight great years of fantastic Woodworks events. We have met some fantastic budding Robin Hoods, Maid Marion’s and Little Johns over the years. Well done to you all and thank you for your support.

Robins Reach Archery would like to take this opportunity in thanking all the organizers especially Anna for all their help and assistance that they gave to us during these past eight years. wishing you all every success with your future plans and events.

    Kind regards.

    Joe (Robins Reach Archery)

  • Ian Sanders says:

Sorry to hear this, always an enjoyable & friendly show to participate in.

  • Jane Morris says:

So disappointed that Woodworks will not be repeated – came several times over the years and thoroughly enjoyed it…

  • tracey hollywell says:

What a pity that woodworks is no longer. It was such a unique event & the one time of the year you could guarantee our family & friends would come to the centre enmass.we loved the music & never left without several purchases.

  • S Balnaves says:

Just gone to check on the woodworks dates for friends and discovered it is not on!!!!
it has been a great day out for us for 4 years and only once did we get wet.
It provides a lovely introduction to the Marston forest area and is informative for adults and educational for the younger generation.
    What is to replace it?
I cannot see anything on the website. and it is now nearly June

      Hi –

As we said in the blog post sadly it had just come to it’s natural end as an event for us and we’re looking at new, different ways we can bring people into the Park across the year to see what we are all about. We don’t have an event in September this year but we have plenty of walks and concerts and our Christmas Tree Festival is on 6th/7th December. Watch the website for more details of all future events (if you liked the folk music at Woodworks, we have something exciting in the pipeline for 2015)- and thank you for coming to Woodworks and enjoying it with us for the past 4 years.

  • ceemjay says:

Really disappointed that you have pulled the plug on Woodworks! It was the best annual event in North Bedfordshire by a long way.

At least be open and honest about the reasons – the people who have supported you over the years deserve nothing less.

No doubt the event did need a bit of revitalisation but the basic formula was fine.

I will be amazed if you get anywhere near the attendance for your substitute events – can’t see myself coming to FMV Country Park for any of them.

    • The Forest says:

You’re not the only person to be disappointed at loosing Woodworks from the Bedfordshire calendar. The decision wasn’t taken lightly. I don’t think we’ve tried to hide our reasons for calling it a day – it took a massive amount of time and effort to organise and made no money for the Trust (in fact it made a loss if one factors in staff time). We ran it for over 10 years as a promotional tool but decided in the end, that it wasn’t worth the time, effort and money. Not sure what else to add to make our position more open and honest. We would always be open to suggestions for new events in the Forest or even, perhaps for a revival of Woodworks, so if you have any brilliant ideas, please do let us know.

      • Jean Gates says:

Just checked to find out if Woodworks is this weekend. We loved coming and looked forward to the weekend.
We are very disappointed to find you have stopped holding this event Please reverse your decision and start holding it again
